In-depth interviews were carried out with a sample of 41 traders from across the country, who represented small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and belonged to the strategic non-resource sectors.
The enterprises exported over 60 products to 40 countries. The bulk of exports were destined to Germany, Romania and the Russian Federation, with Romania accounting for the largest share. Those involved in the production of wine, machinery equipment and some of the food reported that exports represented 100 percent of total sales. Moreover, enterprises’ involved in the export of walnut kernels, confectionary, dried plums and wearing apparel exhibit a more diversified list of export partners, which includes Europe, Central Asia and the United States of America.
The enterprises had a less diversified list of suppliers, with Germany and Italy accounting for 27 percent of total imports, followed by the Romania, the Russian Federation and Ukraine
